Claudio, a wealthy nobleman, played with a blend of sarcasm and sorrowful compassion by Liviu Cheloiu, the company’s jack-of-all-trades, for whom the role once again seemed tailor-made.His wasted life, devoid of genuine passion and social ties, passes him by as his end draws near, in the form of various people, such as his mother, a lover and a childhood friend, whom he has disappointed, tormented or simply ignored.
Realisation comes too late; vowing to mend one’s ways is of no use either. Death, a light-footed, friendly fellow with some decidedly comical traits – once again wonderfully portrayed by Constantin Florescu – leads Claudio, the fool, dancing away from earthly existence.
Mara Opriș dominates the female lead role as a mother who blames herself for everything in a drastically masochistic way; the actress embodies this role to the very extreme – in a manner that is both terrifying and breathtaking.
And not to forget the wonderfully eccentric costumes designed by Oana Paunescu – a real treat for the eyes.
The play reflects on the meaning of life, the inevitability of death and the significance of the present moment, particularly against the backdrop of the current global situation, in which fears and uncertainties regarding life and death have taken on a new dimension in the wake of the world wars.
The performers radiate a genuine joy in their acting; they captivate the audience from the very first minute, lending the play the necessary lightness and making the hour and a half fly by.
